My Jigsaw

Comments No Comments »

I love making jigsaws and still remember my first one.   It came from Santa  and on the box was a picture of a family round the fire opening presents, Christmas tree in the background all bright lights and shiny decorations.  Children happy, adults smiling and a table full of good food waiting to be eaten when they finished opening their presents.

I was eight, living in care and I had not seen my family since I was seven.  Blurred memories still haunt me today.  Christmas pulls you back there even if you try to forget. There were three of us and we were scattered. At eight it felt like forever.

It lasted for ten years.

I saw my family sometimes but only for short visits - all together in a health centre with Social Workers and sometimes my mother, but not always.

I moved on from care into emergency homeless accommodation - then longer-term emergency accommodation until I eventually came to Daisyhouse.  I brought my memories and my hopes with me and hoped I would find the space to sort them out and try to put together the pieces of my real life jigsaw and make a good picture.

I am working on it with the help of good people who looked at me and saw the man I could be.  They took me - warts and all and helped me put more of the jigsaw in place.

There is a lot more of the picture to make but the outline is much clearer in my head. I am in full time education now, I am looking after my health. My family are back in my life and I am learning how to deal with the past so that I can sustain myself in the future. I look forward more to Christmas now and to the New Year and to life. It may not be the same as the picture on my first jigsaw, but it will be what I make it and I will keep on putting it together.

Who Got Quizzical?

Giving their brain a workout recently at the Odeon Harcourt Street were Victoria Clarke and Shane McGowan. Both attended a quiz and jazz night in support of Daisyhouse.

Victoria was quizmaster for the night and Shane was also there to support the event and won a ‘Vichy’ cosmetics hamper!

Added entertainment was provided by Truly DiVine and her indulGENTS whose sassy sensual jazz got everyone’s brains in the swing!

Julie Owens, of Restore Healthfoods Camden Street, who organised the event said:

What a resounding success! Even though it poured out of the heavens, the crowds flocked in and everyone had a real laugh! The atmosphere was fantastic and people were so generous. Many great prizes were kindly donated from local businesses around Camden Street and many of them also showed up to support the event. Victoria was a wonderful MC and kept the crowd really buzzing, as did the really great talents of Lou and her Jazz band - it couldn’t have gone better!

Philip Flanagan, Manager of Daisyhouse said:

The event surpassed all our expectations. We had a full house, great venue, great prizes and everyone seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Victoria kept everyone entertained and Truly DiVine and her indulGENTS provided us with some fantastic music. We raised much needed funds for our projects and raised awareness about the problem of homelessness in Dublin also!

New Floating Service in Navan

Comments No Comments »

Daisyhouse is set to start a new support service for single people who are at risk of homelessness in Navan.

The new service is being developed in partnership with Meath County Council. The Settlement Service of Meath County Council is very effective at finding accommodation for single homeless people, but there is no tenancy sustainment service in Navan for single people who have a history of homelessness or who are at risk of being homeless.

Daisyhouse will employ a support worker who will be based with the Settlement Service of Meath County Council.  The worker will offer visiting support to service users to ensure that they sustain their accommodation and link them in with specialist services where necessary. Funding for the new service is being made available through grants from Meath Local Homeless Forum, State Street Bank and St Stephens Green Trust, topped up with some local fundraising.

A Long Way Home: My Story As A Refugee

Comments No Comments »

My story as a refugee from a war-torn African country and how Daisyhouse helped me to create a new life for myself in Ireland.

“I first became homeless far away in Africa when war raged in my country. Tribe against tribe. Guns and knives and fires. Killing and destruction. We lived in fear in the only home we knew. When the fighting reached our village, we fled in the dark night, families trying to stay together and not lose one another. Small children crying in fear. Trucks waited at Red Cross Centres to take us to safer areas. By the end of our long journey through the night, I had become separated from my family. We had been taken in different directions, across different borders to refugee camps. Although efforts were made to re-unite families, sometimes because of the chaos of war, it was not possible.

I came to Ireland as a refugee as I had an older relative here who sponsored me. Sadly she became ill and could not care for me. I was placed with an Irish family who welcomed me and looked after me until I became an adult.

It was then that Daisyhouse opened their doors to me. I came to them as a young adult seeking to stretch my wings and they welcomed and nurtured me. I found the space there to grow and flourish. When difficulties and hurdles arose in front of me, they were there to speak on my behalf, to guide me when I needed a strong voice to encourage me. My small flat in Daisyhouse was a refuge for me and I remember it as a place where I grew strong. I had privacy and room to develop with support when I needed it. This was a vital time for me to begin to make a life which would be sustainable and give me independence. I wanted to make my contribution to this country where I have been given a home. Thank you to Daisyhouse and to all who have made my life a good one.

Today, ten years later, with the help of the Red Cross, I have located some members of my original family in Africa, and I have visited them. I have a home and work that I love. I have been given an education and I have tried to work hard in return for all the generosity of those who have helped me. I am settled and grateful to everyone who supported me.
